Civil engineering vs automobile engineering: which is better 

According to BLS the average salary of civil engineers is $88,000 per year, while in the automobile industry salaries are a little bit higher around  $91,000 according to the recruiter. The employment rate in civil engineering is around 25000 jobs every year while the automobile industry is expected to reach 35,000 in 2029, which means Approximately 4 to 5000 jobs occupations offered every year.

So when we compare civil and automobile engineering we find that civil engineering is 4 times broader than automobile engineering. Simply because civil engineering occupations have many specialties, not like automobile engineering which is more specific or better to say a subfield of mechanical engineering.

Most  Engineers who work in automobile engineering come from a background in mechanical engineering and then decide to take the specialization in automobile engineering.  but you can take an automobile engineering Bachelor’s directly without studying mechanical engineering. which is not recommended or a good choice for a mechanical engineer.

If you earn a mechanical engineering Bachelor you would have the opportunity to work in many Industries including automobile engineering,  but getting an automobile engineering Bachelor’s would force you to stay limited to working only in automobile engineering Industries which is not good and flexible.

Which is harder civil engineering or automobile engineering

Civil and automobile engineering are equal in terms of difficulty. They are almost always studying the same topics in math and physics. The only difference is, that in automobile engineering students focus on Design and all technical parts related to Cars, while civil engineers Focus on buildings, Bridges hydrology, and geologic systems.

In the first 2 years of civil engineering and automobile engineering students are required to complete these difficult math courses:

Studying thermodynamics and heat transfer in automobile engineering is different from civil engineering.

In physics courses like thermodynamics, Heat transfer, automobile engineers focus on applying topics in mechanical systems of cars like radiators or any devices that submit to high temperatures. 

 In civil engineering students study thermodynamics and heat transfer for multiple aspects related to chemical engineerings like cement Production, Metal compression, and dilation used in buildings or bridges.

The other aspect of automobile engineering is focusing on machine design. You will be learning how to design cars, vehicles, or any mechanical parts that are involved in car production. You have to take specific courses to learn some famous software used for mechanical design like CAD and Solidwork.

In civil engineering, you are not required to learn machine design. You would be focusing on other topics like  Structural Engineering ensuring the solidity of buildings structures, or geotechnical verifying the foundations(soil type, water, geology nature) buildings should stem on.

Anyway, if you are interested in studying civil or automobile engineering, you have to be good at math and physics and have some generalities in chemistry. If you struggle in mathematics, civil or automobile engineering majors would be harder for you to complete.

Which should you choose Civil or automobile engineering

if you are fascinated by buildings, rivers, bridges, and big Constructions and love to work outdoors, is probably that civil engineering is the best choice you have to opt for you, Civil engineering would allow you to move out of your desk to work in different site constructions and different plants, not like automobile engineering student should be located in one single place which is in manufacturing, production or research departments.

On the other hand, if you are interested and have a passion for car mechanical systems and like to design, thus automobile engineering would be a good choice to opt for, but we recommend majoring in mechanical instead of automobile engineering, It would give you more flexibility to work in different Industries even automobile engineering itself.

 To clarify more, if you didn’t find a job in the automobile industry with a mechanical engineering degree, you still have the chance to apply for different mechanical engineering  Industries like Aerospace, aeronautics, or ship engineering. 

You would have a lot of flexibility to change between Industries and even move away from automobile engineering to other sectors if you find a good raise job opportunity. Automobile engineering will keep you Limited and find a lot difficulty to switch between jobs.

Can a civil engineer work in the automotive industry?

It is very hard to work in the automotive industry as a civil engineer, the curriculum of civil and automotive engineering is totally different, and there is no overlap between the topics taught in civil and automotive engineering. In civil engineering students study topics related to environmental engineering like building, foundations, and building structures,  while in the automotive industry students are focusing on mechanical parts like design and Manufacturing.

The only option civil engineers have is to switch from civil engineering major to automotive engineering or mechanical engineering. 

If you have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering you could go back and have a second engineering degree.

 You will not have to study a complete 4 years, because the first 2 years of civil and automotive engineering are similar in terms of mathematics and physics courses so you don’t have to retake them again. 

It might take you 2 or 3 years of study if you are interested to work in this industry.
