1 – industrial engineering is heavier in math than industrial engineering technology

Industrial engineering is heavier in mathematics than industrial engineering technology,  in industrial engineering principal major you will be required to complete a lot of mathematics  difficult courses including:

In industrial engineering technology, you will not be required to complete these huge and difficult mathematics courses. The curriculum of mathematics is way easier. It is just required to have a solid foundation in high school math.

So there is a big difference in terms of difficulties. Industrial engineering technology is made for people who don’t want to struggle in difficult mathematics courses like calculus, linear algebra, and probability. 

The most difficult math courses for industrial Engineers should be calculus 3 and differential equations,  so luckily in industrial engineering technology, you will not be required to complete these tough courses. 

So if you are bad and don’t have a good foundation in mathematics, industrial engineering technology would be a good option if you like to work by hand and be away from heavier math theory.

2 – Industrial engineering  technology is the hand on major

Almost 90% of industrial engineering technology topics are practical subjects. Almost all the courses you’ll be taking in physics mechanics involve a lot of lab sessions.

You will be spending the majority of your time in labs and in front of the machines, especially mechanical machines like milling and CNC  machines, in addition to dealing with robotics machines and learning industrial design.

So if you are interested in working and making your hand dirty industrial engineering technology is the best option to opt for. Especially if you don’t like it, and don’t ready to prevent the headache of math studies.

3 – Industrial engineering is higher pay than industrial engineering technology

According to BLS, the average salary of industrial engineering is $95,000 per year, While industrial engineering technologists is earning only $65,000, 32% lower. But the salary is not the only problem.

 Industrial technology is limited and doesn’t have higher job opportunities like the principal industrial engineering field,   there are only 6300 jobs offered for technologists. But when we look at the principal engineering field, there are 23,000 jobs offered which is 4 times broader. 

So the odds of finding a job as an industrial engineering technologist are less than in industrial engineering. Because this field is only evolving by 4% compared to 14% for industrial engineering.

If you are aiming to earn a higher salary, industrial engineering technology is not the right place. Earning $65,000 is not an encouraging salary if you want to ensure a comfortable financial life. Is better to opt for industrial engineering,  it is more difficult than theoretical but you will be earning an additional $30,000 per year.

4 – industrial engineers technologists don’t have to take bachelor

Industrial engineering technologists are not required to take a bachelor’s degree,  they just have to take an associate’s degree like technicians such as a post-secondary certificate, where you take private programs giving you specific training and different study from a college education.

It doesn’t mean that you are not studying industrial engineering technology in College,  but in Industrial engineering technology, you are not required to complete a 4 year Bachelor’s like the principal industrial engineering major. 

you could complete industrial engineering technology in just 3 years or even less depending on the accelerated program you are taking.

5 – The industrial engineering technologist environments work is different

Industrial engineering technologists work in manufacturing Industries surrounded by machines. In most cases, they work by hand solving technical problems about machines or fixing raw materials problems.

On the other hand, industrial engineers can be working in both places, in Offices analyzing data,  or labs developing the new product, or even in manufacturing environments improving a process like increasing the productivity or production line or reducing a raw material used in production.

But in most cases they don’t work by hand,  they give assignments and sometimes orders to industrial engineering technologists about how the tweaks are the tasks they should make.

 so industrial engineers have higher responsibilities than industrial engineering technologists.


If you have good basics or a foundation in mathematics we recommend majoring in industrial engineering,  you would have the highest salary in a more respectful job than industrial engineering Technologies. Even if you love to work by your hand, having a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering is way better than an associate degree.

 It would give you a lot of opportunities to work in related engineering occupations more easily than industrial engineering technology.

If you are struggling in mathematics and see that math is not for you, in addition, you are interested working by your hand, then becoming an industrial engineering technologist is a good option but you have to accept losing a 40% pay cut.
