Yes, it is possible to double major in physics and electrical engineering. Many schools offer double major programs where students can study a combination of electrical engineering and physics courses in one single program.

 but In most cases and depending on the school you enroll in, you will be required to complete physics and electrical engineering double in more than 4 years. it could be a 4.5 for 5 years.

The double major program in physics and electrical engineering requires studying theoretical science subjects like thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and physical relativity, on the other side completing engineering courses like circuits analysis, programming, Hardware design, and some Physics courses related to electrical engineering like electricity and electromagnetism.

Are a double major in physics and electrical engineering worth it?

Absolutely not, double majoring in physics and electrical engineering is not worth it. You would have a lot of workloads and have to study a lot of irrelevant subjects. You won’t be taking advantage of any of the courses in physics or electrical engineering.

It is not worth taking a difficult and very complicated major like physics and electrical engineering,  because you will struggle a lot and have a lot of challenges to complete a program at the right time. You would have a higher odds to fail, risking dropping or lowering your GPA.

The only advantage that you could have is to prepare yourself for grad school by studying applied physics by having a broad idea about physics and experimenting with electrical engineering which is not useful for applying for jobs.

1 – physics and electrical engineering are not similar as you might expect

Physics and electrical engineering are not similar topics even if they meet in some subjects like electricity and electromagnetism. But electrical engineering is more applied and specific than physics.

In physics, you have to complete general courses that don’t have any correlation to electricity or electrical engineering, like quantum mechanics, solid physics, physics relativity, and so on.

In electrical engineering, you have applied courses that focus on design and communication technology like radar, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth,  in addition to Hardware design like PCB design, robotics, and signal processing.

 Once you study these electrical engineering topics you will realize that quantum mechanics or solid physics will not have any relevance except in some advanced topics you would need as an electrical engineer.

2 – double major in physics and electrical engineering is hard

You would have a lot of subjects to complete, in physics, math, and engineering.  It is very difficult to complete all these subjects in just 4 years,  you would be under a lot of stress and load that most people couldn’t bear with. 

3 – you will be studying unnecessary courses for both majors 

There is no overlap between a lot of subjects that double major programs offer.

 For instance, in electrical engineering, you won’t benefit from studying quantum mechanics. On the other hand, physics doesn’t need programming taught in electrical engineering.

 so then there is no correlation and a lot of effort and time wasted between these both majors.

 Studying physics topics like quantum mechanics or relativity physics is preparing you to take grad schools like master’s or Ph.D. to finally become a physicist.

  While electronics and circuit design prepare you to be an electrical engineer designing circuits and solving hardware programming problems,  especially if you are interested in going into embedded systems or robotics. 

4 – no job advantages

Having a double major in physics and electrical engineering will not give you any advantage when you apply for jobs.  A double major degree can allow you to be an electrical engineer but not being a physicist.

 To be a physicist you have to complete your studies taking the master’s and Ph.D. which means adding 4 to 10 years of grinding and hard work.

 In addition, the electrical engineering subjects you took will not have any usefulness in your grade curriculum even if you choose to minor in some related fields like electricity or electromagnetism,  grad school, study deeper and more theoretical aspects that electrical engineering doesn’t take into consideration.

On the other hand, if you are looking to favorise your job opportunities with this double major you are wrong. In addition, a regular electrical engineer graduate might have an advantage because he had a lot of spare time having internships and networking, while you would likely be studying in the summer, focusing on completing your double major courses, a mistake a lot of students fall into.

The best thing to do is to focus on 1 thing if you are interested and love physics you major in physics,  on the other hand, if you are interested in design and love applied physics electrical engineering would be a good choice for you.
